Our Fantastic New Season Begins… On the way to TEXAS! TWT, June 4, 2024December 2, 2024 Traveling with Terriers new season begins with a trip to Texas by way of New Mexico. Starting Out our New Season Welcome to a new season of Traveling with Terriers! We have a lot of really great adventures planned for this season and are so excited that you have joined us! We are going to start this year off with a trip to Texas by way of New Mexico to see a once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse! As I mentioned in an earlier blog, when Danny started talking about going to Texas to see the solar eclipse two years ago, I wasn’t as excited as he was. Then, it got cold in Cheyenne, and warm in Texas. I realized this could end up being a pretty good deal. Especially if we could make a loop of the trip and stop in a few places in New Mexico and come back through Oklahoma and western Kansas. So, that’s exactly what we did. The first part of our trip isn’t documented in this video. We visited those same places last spring and have already produced adventures with them. One of those places is a favorite of ours, the Riverwalk in Pueblo, Colorado. It is a great place to stop for lunch and also take a nice long walk to stretch your legs. If you would like to see our adventures in that area, we have two videos- a Hike-a-Long with Tommy and Winston and our adventure to Walsenburg, CO and Taos, NM. This weeks video picked up once we got to the extreme southern part of Colorado. This is where one of my favorite views along I-25 is. I think it’s Raton Pass, but I’m not sure. So, if you know, please comment and enlighten me! I think this is Raton Pass in Colorado. It’s one of my favorite views along I-25, so if I’m wrong, please enlighten me! Raton, NM and Sugarite Canyon State Park Once we drove over Raton Pass, we were in New Mexico. That night we stayed at Sugarite Canyon State Park near Raton, NM. This was a pretty little park, hidden away in a canyon. Lots of deer and apparently bear roam the area. We saw a herd of deer on our way to and from dinner in Raton, but no bears. It might have been too early in the season and they were still hibernating. A herd of deer along the road to Sugarite Canyon State Park in Raton, NM. The town of Raton, NM has a great small-town feel, with lots of little shops that we could have poked through had we been there during business hours. We stopped at Los Chanquis restaurant in the downtown area and had some amazing Mexican Food! We highly recommend it if you are in the area. Excellent food at Los Chanquis Mexican Restaurant in Raton, NM New Season, Day Two! Headed for Alamogordo. The next day was another long driving day. We stopped in Las Vegas, New Mexico for lunch and to pick up a much needed item that magically disappeared from the camper. Danny decided he needed a comb for his gym bag. Not sure why, since he doesn’t use it very often because he usually comes home to shower after the gym. Anyway, he took the comb out of the camper, put it in his gym bag and I didn’t know about it until I went to comb my hair and there was no comb. So, we stopped at Walmart in Las Vegas and got one. Then, it was back on the road to Alamogordo. We pulled in that afternoon to the Mountain Meadows RV Park, in Tularosa (which is right next door to Alamogordo), New Mexico. This is a really cool RV park. The owner was very friendly and helpful. They have a great hiking area right behind the RV park where you can hike around a gorge. The dogs loved seeing all the pheasants and other animals. They even had sleds that you can borrow for sand sledding adventures. We took full advantage of this perk, but we saved that adventure for our next episode! Tommy and Winston hunt for critters along the hiking path behind Mountain Meadows RV Park, Tularosa, NM. So, for now, we hope you enjoy our first episode of a new season of Traveling with Terriers. We have lots of exciting adventures in store for you this year, so please stay tuned!
