Just Arrived! Back in the USA in Time to Watch the Best Lumberjack Show You’ve Ever Seen in Michigan! TWT, February 18, 2025March 5, 2025 This week, we return to the United States. While we were sad to bid Canada adieu, Michigan was definitely a warm welcome back. We truly enjoyed our time in the Mackinaw City area and took so much footage that we divided it into 3 episodes. First up, we highlight the border crossing back into the US and a lumberjack show.Michigan welcomes the Traveling with Terriers family back to the US at Sault Ste. Marie.South of the Border (of Canada, eh?)We crossed back into the United States at the Sault Ste. Marie border crossing. Danny and I were both pretty nervous about crossing back- more so than we were when crossing into Canada. Part of this nervousness was due to the busier port of entry we used this time. Another part was due to the recent changes to the dog import rules that the US implemented and then unimplemented. Since the changes took effect close to our departure, we weren’t sure if the paperwork was correct.Thankfully, we experienced a fairly simple border crossing. The guard asked us for our passports and questioned us about our produce and sent us on our way. He didn’t even ask to see our information on our dogs. After reading and watching countless articles and videos about the nightmare that other travelers have experienced, we count ourselves lucky that both of our crossings were good. It made us ready to head over the border again this year…but more about that later! If you are researching border crossings, I wrote this blog a few weeks ago detailing our experience crossing into Canada. We also have a Tips and Tricks video coming soon that gives viewers more information about what to look for when planning to cross the border.Sault Ste. Marie, MichiganOne of the benefits of using the port of entry at Sault Ste. Marie is that you see a birds-eye view of the Soo Locks as you are crossing the International Bridge between Canada and the US. These 100% gravity fed locks look like a great attraction to come back and visit. Since we thoroughly enjoyed our time in Michigan, the locks are on our bucket list for when we return to the Upper Peninsula. On to Mackinaw City! One of the reasons we ended up in this part of Michigan is because neither one of us had ever visited the Great Lakes region. Another reason? One of my bucket list destinations was Mackinac Island. However, once I started researching the area, I discovered there is a lot to do in Mackinaw City! So, we found a great campground and decided to spend a week investigating the area. The campground we chose to stay at, Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground sits on the banks of Lake Huron. With swimming beaches for both dogs and humans, a camp store, plenty of campsites and cabins for visitors, walking paths and lots to do it ranks as one of our favorite places that we have stayed. One of the benefits of staying at this particular campground is its close proximity to Mackinaw City, all the area attractions and the nearby town of Cheboygan. Another benefit is the lumberjack show that is less than a mile away! The Best Lumberjack Show in Michigan! That may be our humble opinion, of course. Especially since we have never seen another lumberjack show. The Jack Pine Lumberjack Show was quite a treat! The show is set up to teach the audience about the various tools and techniques used in the logging industry that the Mackinaw City area is known for. Back in the day, a good logger used all the skills showcased to fell trees and transport the logs downstream to sawmills where they were turned into lumber. In their free time, these loggers created competitions to show off their skills. This tradition continues today at the Jack Pine Lumberjack Show and others like it. Danny and I found it both informative and entertaining.More Michigan to Come!As I mentioned earlier, we took so much footage of all the great things Mackinaw City has to offer that we had to divide it into three episodes! So, be on the lookout! Some highlights include visits to some living history museums, Mackinac Island (of course) and even experience the northern lights! For more footage of our border crossing, Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground and the Jack Pine Lumberjack Show check out this episode.
