The Start of a New Adventure! TWT, April 20, 2024August 18, 2024 The Traveling with Terriers family visits The Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, NM. on their first big adventure The Adventure Begins 2022 was a bit of a life changing year for us. Right on the heels of Covid, our family experienced multiple events that caused us to re-evaluate how we live and work on a daily basis. So, Danny and I decided to make traveling our priority while we are young enough and energetic enough to enjoy it. We also wanted to be able to share our adventures with other people along the way. This is how we ended up with a YouTube channel, careers that allow us to be flexible when we want to go somewhere, and multiple upgrades to our new camper, “Lost”. This was the start of a new adventure! Where Should We Go? Despite having done a shakedown trip, and multiple trips the previous year, we wanted to go somewhere warm and fairly close to work the kinks out of our new system of travel. The closest place to Cheyenne that is warm in March? New Mexico. Danny and I had traveled to the area before, but mostly as a drive through on the way home from a trip we took to Arizona. This time, we decided to stay for a while and see everything the area has to offer. The Adventure Day 1- Pueblo and Walsenburg, CO Traveling with Terriers starts their first big trip with stops in Pueblo and Walsenburg, CO and Taos, NM. We traveled from Cheyenne to Walsenburg, CO on the first day, with a stop for lunch in Pueblo, CO. Tommy and Winston really enjoyed taking a nice long walk along the Pueblo Riverwalk. Highlights of this walk are posted it in our “Hike-a-Long series of videos. It was fun to see Tommy and Winston make some new friends on their walk! That night we camped at Lathrop State Park, which is a beautiful area with cool hiking trails that lead up into the rocks. We would love to go back and visit for longer than one night, but with Tommy and Winston, we would need to visit early in the season before it gets too hot. View from the hiking trail at Lathrop State Park near Walsenburg, CO. That evening we took a nice long hike through the rocks. By the time we got back to Lost, we were all freezing! There was a storm coming in and the temperature was starting to drop. We were really glad we got some more video footage of the hike and were able to watch it again inside where it was warm! Adventure Day 2: Walsenburg to Taos, NM We are big fans of taking the roads less traveled. So, despite the weather looking less than sunny, we took a smaller highway from Lathrop State Park to Taos, NM instead of the interstate. It was quite an adventure! We went over a mountain pass at just the right time and ran into some snow. This was not a new experience for us, so we made it through the storm and into sunshine, warm weather, and some beautiful scenery on the other side! Such beautiful scenery coming from Walsenburg, CO to Taos, NM along a state highway! Once we arrived in Taos, we saw lots of great sites and had some great Mexican food from a restaurant there. If the weather had been warmer, we probably would have stayed in town and explored more, but Tommy and Winston were cold, so we headed towards our campground for the evening. On the way, we stopped by the Rio Grande Gorge and got to see a herd of Bighorn Sheep hanging out nearby! A herd of Bighorn sheep hanging out near the Rio Grande Gorge. Next Stop, Santa Fe! The next day we headed further south to Santa Fe. On the way, we stopped at El Santuario de Chimayo. This is an old mission, dating from 1857. It is a site for pilgrimages from all over the United States, and many people walk there from Santa Fe every year during the Easter season. It is also the site of a small pit of Holy Dirt, which is said to have healing powers. We were asked to stop by and get some of this dirt for Dannys family, which we did. While we were there, we explored the site, and also experienced an outdoor mass taking place in the courtyard that day. It was a cool experience that all four of us were able to do together because it is a dog friendly place! El Santuario de Chimayo between Taos and Santa Fe, NM. That evening, we arrived in Santa Fe and settled in to our site at Santa Fe Skies RV Resort. This is the second time we stayed at this resort and both time they were wonderful! Nice big sites, full hookups, laundry and a great paved walking path for Tommy and Winston. It sits on a hill just outside of Santa Fe, and at night you can see the beautiful sunsets filled with pinks and reds! That evening, Danny and I enjoyed a wonderful New Mexican dinner complete with mariachi music at Tomasita’s Restaurant, but we will tell you more about that next time!
